A scrolling teleprompter moves at a set speed. Terera, a teleprompter for Windows and Mac, does four things instead: it follows your voice word by word, it waits when you pause, it holds your place when you go off script, and it resumes when you return to the script. Speech recognition runs on your own computer, and voice following works in English.

A set speed, or your voice
A scrolling teleprompter moves at a set speed, and you keep up with it. That suits a reading you have rehearsed to a steady rhythm, and Terera has a timed scroll for it, which does not use the microphone. A meeting is different: you stop for a laugh, take a question, or add the point that has just occurred to you.
That is what voice following is for. Terera follows your voice word by word, waits when you pause, holds your place when you go off script, and resumes when you return to the script. You can answer a question without managing the scroll.
Four behaviours in one real take
The take below is a screen recording of Terera on Windows following a synthetic voice that reads the script shown. The voice is fed to the app’s microphone input directly. It was filmed in Rehearse mode with Audience set to 3 or more, and nothing inside the take is cut, re-timed or sped up.

0:14.9Holding on “and” (holds your place when you go off script)
0:21.5Following “and resumes when you return to the script.” (resumes when you return to the script)
Transcript, with the words said off script in brackets: Eyes up. It follows your voice word by word. It waits when you pause. It holds your place when you go off script, [Sorry, quick aside. Somebody’s doorbell keeps ringing downstairs. Apparently a courier won’t leave that parcel anywhere sensible. Right.] and resumes when you return to the script.
The same take plays on the home page with its moments marked. The home page also has a simulated demo you can drive yourself, which does not use your microphone.
What to ask before you buy one
Where does the speech recognition run? On your computer, or on a server? With Terera it runs on your computer; the speech model, about 190 MB, downloads at setup.
What happens when you leave the script? Terera holds your place when you go off script and resumes when you return to the script.
What happens when someone else talks? Terera does not identify speakers, so a headset helps keep other voices out of the microphone.
Which languages? Terera’s voice following works in English. Manual and timed scrolling work in any language.
Does formatting get in the way? No. Voice following uses the words, not the formatting, so bold, italics and colour change nothing about it.
How do you find out whether it suits your voice? With Terera, buy it and use it with your own voice, your microphone and the calls you actually make. If it is not right, email support@terera.app within 30 days for a full refund.
You sing, or read lyrics. Voice following is designed for speech and does not sync to singing; Terera’s timed scroll works for lyrics.
You only need a steady scroll at a set speed. Terera has one, but you would be paying for voice following you do not need; our comparison with Virtual Teleprompter covers that case.
Your script is not in English. Voice following works in English; manual and timed scrolling work in any language.
You record on a phone. Terera is a desktop app for Windows and Mac.
Terera
USD 89 once, tax included. Three of your own machines, Windows or Mac. Twelve months of updates, and the installed version keeps working after that. A 30-day refund by email.
That is the name many people search under. What Terera does is narrower and easier to check: it follows your voice word by word, waits when you pause, holds your place when you go off script, and resumes when you return to the script.
Does Terera’s speech recognition run in the cloud?
No. Speech recognition runs on your own computer. Terera needs the internet for setup, when it downloads its speech model, and for periodic licence checks.
What happens when someone else talks?
Terera does not identify speakers. A headset helps keep other voices out of your microphone.
Which languages does voice following support?
English. Manual and timed scrolling work in any language.
Can I use Terera for singing?
As a timed teleprompter for lyrics, yes. Voice following is designed for speech and does not sync to singing.
