Teleprompter.com is a polished, popular mobile-first prompter — mostly for recording videos on a phone — with a voice-tracking mode called VoiceGlide and a subscription. Terera is a Windows desktop overlay for live meetings and one-take recordings, with voice-following that runs entirely on your machine and a price you pay once.
The same promise, kept in two different places: their tracking listens by default through the cloud; ours never leaves your desk.
The part both of us agree on
A prompter should follow the speaker, not the other way round. Teleprompter.com's FAQ puts it well — VoiceGlide "listens as you speak and scrolls only as fast as you actually talk, so the script waits when you do." That is the right idea, and they deserve credit for building it into a phone app that half a million people have downloaded.
Where the listening happens
Their FAQ is candid about the plumbing: by default the app "may use cloud-based speech-to-text providers." On-device-only processing is documented for Zero Data Retention accounts — a team-plan arrangement. Terera runs speech recognition on your computer using a model downloaded during setup. There is no cloud speech mode to opt out of. Model downloads and licensing need network access; your script, audio and rehearsal history are not included in those requests.
Whether that matters depends on what you read into a prompter. If your script is a YouTube intro, probably not much. If it's a board briefing, a legal update, or an earnings call rehearsal, "where does my script and voice go" stops being a philosophical question.
Where Teleprompter.com is ahead
The phone. They have iOS and Android apps with a big, warm review base — 4.8 stars across some 28,000 App Store ratings when we checked — plus video recording, captions, and editing built in. There's a free tier with a watermark. If you record talking-head video on your phone and want one app for the whole job, they're a sensible pick, and Terera doesn't even enter the race: we have no mobile app and record nothing.
Where Terera is ahead
The desk, and the live take. Terera floats over your slides or call as a click-through overlay. Screen-share hiding depends on the capture method, so check the sharing preview before a live meeting. You choose where the reading surface sits for your audience. It follows your voice, holds when you go off script and resumes when your speech matches nearby text. Terera costs USD 89 once, tax included, for three personal machines, against $19.99 a month (or about $90 a year, billed annually) for their Pro plan as listed when we checked.
On their Google Play listing, the most common complaint theme in public reviews at the time of checking was VoiceGlide reliability — one paid reviewer wrote it "works about 33% of the time." We won't pretend that tells you our tracking is better; it tells you the market's patience for voice-following that half-works is thin, which is exactly why Terera's version runs on-device with a thirty-day refund attached. Try it against your voice, your accent, your mic — and if it doesn't earn its place, take the refund.
