Terera
vs Virtual Teleprompter

Two desktop prompters for online meetings. One scrolls at the speed you choose; the other follows your voice word by word.

Virtual Teleprompter scrolls at your chosen speed. Terera follows your voice word by word.

The short version

Virtual Teleprompter, from VTP Apps, is a laptop prompter for online meetings. You paste your notes, choose a scrolling speed and a transparency, and place it over your meeting window. A no-cost version takes up to 1,000 characters; the Pro version is a one-off $8.99 in the Microsoft Store. Terera floats over your call or slides too, but it follows your voice word by word, waits when you pause, holds your place when you go off script, and resumes when you return to the script. You pay for it once.

Virtual Teleprompter

What Virtual Teleprompter is

A straightforward scrolling prompter, made for meetings. Manual scroll, or auto scroll at a speed you change with the arrow keys; a window with adjustable transparency that you lay over Zoom, Teams or Webex; bold, italic and underline; mirror text for beam-splitter glass; and right-to-left text for languages such as Arabic and Hebrew. VTP Apps says it “does not use or require any internet connectivity”. It has been in the Microsoft Store since 2021.

Terera

What Terera is

A desktop app for Windows and Mac that floats over whatever you’re presenting from: your slides, your call, your notes. It follows your voice word by word, waits when you pause, holds your place when you go off script, and resumes when you return to the script. It has a timed scroll too, for a steady read. Speech recognition runs on your own computer.

Virtual Teleprompter

Where Virtual Teleprompter is ahead

Price and reach. The Pro version is $8.99 in the Microsoft Store and $6.99 in the Mac App Store, and a version limited to 1,000 characters costs nothing. It runs on older Macs than Terera does, and it never needs the internet; Terera needs the network for model downloads and licensing, including periodic licence checks. It handles right-to-left languages such as Arabic and Hebrew, and a Microsoft Store purchase installs on up to ten Windows devices.

If a steady scroll is all you need, Virtual Teleprompter is the sensible buy. Terera’s own site says Terera isn’t for anyone who only needs a steady scroll at a set speed.

Terera

Where Terera is ahead

Following you. Virtual Teleprompter offers manual scroll or auto scroll at an adjustable speed, and its site and store listings do not describe voice following. Terera follows your voice word by word, waits when you pause, holds your place when you go off script, and resumes when you return to the script. You can answer a question without managing the scroll.

The meeting itself. VTP Apps advises keeping its window off your meeting’s mute, camera and sharing buttons, and its PowerPoint guide runs the slide show in a window and advises sharing only the PowerPoint application, not the desktop or the entire screen. Terera’s overlay passes your clicks through to the window beneath. On Windows it stays above a full-screen slideshow and can be left out of a screen share. Screen-share hiding depends on the capture method your app uses, so check your sharing preview before a live call.

The rest. Reading positions for two listeners or a room. Word import that keeps bold, italics and colour, where Virtual Teleprompter takes pasted text. And a thirty-day refund, no reason needed; VTP Apps does not publish a refund policy.

The verdict

Buy Virtual Teleprompter if a steady scroll is enough.

You set the speed, the text keeps it, and $8.99 covers it. With Terera you would be paying for a job you don’t need done.

Buy Terera if you want the prompter to follow you.

On a live call or over a deck, where you’ll stop, take a question and come back: Terera waits when you pause, holds your place when you go off script, and resumes when you return to the script.
